The United States Air Force (USAF) is the air service branch of the United States Armed Forces, established on September 18, 1947, with its origins tracing back to August 1, 1907, as part of the United States Army Signal Corps. The USAF is one of the six armed forces and one of the eight uniformed services of the United States, with its core missions including air supremacy, global integrated intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, rapid global mobility, global strike, and command and control. The USAF is led by the Department of the Air Force, which serves as its headquarters and executive department, and is one of the three military departments of the Department of Defense, alongside the [[department-of-the-army|Department of the Army]] and the [[department-of-the-navy|Department of the Navy]].
