Overview

Oppida were large fortified settlements that emerged during the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, primarily associated with the Celtic late La Tène culture, and played a significant role in the development of European towns and cities. These settlements were spread across Europe, from Britain and Iberia to the Hungarian Plain, and continued to be used until the Roman conquest. The legacy of oppida can be seen in the many Roman-era towns and cities that were built on their foundations, such as [[london|London]] and [[paris|Paris]].
