Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak is a renowned Indian scholar, literary theorist, and feminist critic, best known for her essay 'Can the Subaltern Speak?' and her translations of Jacques Derrida's and Mahasweta Devi's works. She is a University Professor at Columbia University and a founding member of the Institute for Comparative Literature and Society. Spivak has been awarded the 2012 Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy and the 2013 Padma Bhushan for her contributions to critical theory and education.
